Comment from Genjiro Okura
This is an opportunity to appreciate video archives of valuable Mingei (folk art) research.
16mm film left behind by pioneers of Mingei such as Muneyoshi Yanagi, Bernard Leach, and Shoji Hamada has been restored by Canadian director Marty Gross into a digital archive over more than 40 years.
The videos were filmed in a wide range of places, such as Onta, Tamba, Okinawa, and South Korea.
There are also many recordings about Mingei such as weaving and ceramics which have been re-edited with commentary by those knowledgeable about those olden times.
We also offer the option of requesting a video from the available list to allow you to enjoy the valuable films of Shurijo Castle before WWII, Jiro Kinjo, or Shoji Hamada.
Please enjoy these unique, precious films in which elementary school kids ask the director himself questions, as you experience SUIGIAN.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the films are in Japan for a limited time; this is an urgent screening.
Please come join us.
This event ended on July 11th (Mon)
