"Kyogen" is a traditional Japanese performing art that developed from an offshoot of Sangaku, said to have been transmitted from the Chinese mainland in the Nara period (710-794 A.D.), with various preexisting art forms in Japan.
In comparison to the sophisticated musical theater of "Noh," "Kyogen" is farcical comedy with realistic performances and humorous depictions of people.
Together with "Noh," it was designated an intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
