Based on a form of court entertainment from the era when Okinawa Prefecture once formed the Ryukyu Kingdom, it has been passed down through generations to the present day, with classical dances inherited from the Ryukyu era (1429-1879) and modern works created since the Meiji period (1868-1912), etc.
The dancing costumes use traditional Okinawa dyeing and weaving techniques such as Ryukyu bingata and Ryukyu kasuri, embellishing the performances.
In 2009, it was designated an important intangible cultural property of Japan.
