SUIGIAN presents Edition Two of its programmed series featuring new and creative fusions of Japanese traditional arts and culture, "JAZZNOH LAB.".

Tsunao Yamai| BLU-SWING

It will be a collaboration representing Japan, between Tsunao Yamai, Noh master of the Komparu school of Shite-kata (principal actor) and recipient of the general designation of Important Intangible Cultural Property and "BLU-SWING," a five-person band active worldwide which pursues its unique jazz-based sound.

We will begin with a Noh dance performance of "Hagoromo" by the Shite-kata Tsunao Yamai and his apprentice, the Noh actress Kiyomi Muraoka; through a dance by Shite-kata Tsunao Yamai and Noh chanting session by BLU-SWING vocalists Yu-ri Tanaka and Kiyomi Muraoka to an original song composed by BLU-SWING, we will create an experimental space which fuses jazz vocals and Noh chanting.
Then, with a live performance by the internationally acclaimed BLU-SWING, the quintessence of city pop jazz, we will travel back and forth, merging and transforming from Noh to jazz.

The theme of our cuisine at SUIGIAN is based on the "24 seasons and 72 micro-seasons," which serves as a leitmotif of our "Plays on Culture, via the Seasons in Japan."
On February 2nd, which is the period of "Niwatori hajimete toya ni tsuku (Hens start laying eggs)," our guests can enjoy creative cuisine prepared from seasonal ingredients representative of this micro-season, together with fine beverages.

As the projection-mapped story plays against the backdrop of the ancient pine tree painted in the Edo period (1608 – 1967) by an artist of the Kano school, cutting-edge techno music will fuse with traditional performing arts to create a SUIGIAN-style hospitality for all to enjoy.

* Jo-Ha-Kyu: Japanese performing arts term which refers to three phases of a musical piece or stage performance. "Jo" is a peaceful introduction; "Ha" is a dense development phase; and "Kyu" is a fast-paced final chapter.
