– Kokaji (The Swordsmith) –
During the Heian period (794-1185 A.D.), the renowned master swordsmith Sanjō Munechika receives an Imperial order to forge a sacred sword.
However, because he lacks a partner of equal stature with whom he can properly hammer a blade, Munechika decides to go to the Fushimi Inari Taisha to pray to his guardian deity for assistance.
His prayers are answered with the appearance of Inari ōkami, who offers to serve as his partner. With the blade completed, it is engraved with the name of Kogitsune (Little Fox), upon which the deity soars into the heavens, beyond the Inariyama (Mt. Inari).
This magnificent sword was christened "Kogitsunemaru," and subsequently Munechika becomes renowned across the land, throughout the ages and into the present day.
Based on the Noh play "Kokaji," this Kagura dance is noted for its simple and direct structure―a unique trait characteristic of the Kagura form. It is a highly auspicious ceremony during which the Inari ōkami proclaims peace throughout the land and bumper crops of the five grains.
* Sanjo Munechika: A swordsmith who lived during the Heian period. He resided in Sanjo, Kyoto, and was known as "Sanjō Kokaji". Although few of his engraved works have survived to this day, his famous sword "Mikazuki Munechika (National Treasure)" is recognized as one of the Tenka-Goken (Five Greatest Swords under Heaven).
* Inari ōkami: Deity of grain and agriculture. Today, this deity is associated with all kinds of economic activities, including commerce and industry. It is the chief deity of many Inari shrines, most notably the head shrine Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto.

Special Performance
Kagura "Tenson Kōrin"
– Hōjō no mai, Sakahoko no mikotonori –
November 16th (Sat)

Kagura TensonKōrin

A performing arts that offers up a prayer for long life, abundant harvest of crops, and cleansing of misfortune; additionally, many performance programs feature Noh plays and the myths of Chronicles of Japan, etc. as a theme. It is a traditional art greatly loved over the ages by the masses, and even now is indispensable to shrine festivals.

Appearance: Bushu Sato-Kagura "Ishiyama Shachu"
Sarutahiko no Mikoto: Naoki Shibata |
Ninigi no Mikoto: Hiromasa Ishiyama
Flute: Koh Matsuzawa |
Large drum: Takako Takahashi |
Big drum: Yudai Suzuki
Program: Sato-Kagura "Tenson Kōrin"
– Hōjō no mai, Sakahoko no mikotonori
(Fertility Dance, Decree of the Upturned Spear) –
The "Ten" in Tenson refers to Amaterasu Ōmikami, an Amatsukami (god of the heavens), while "Son" signifies that Tenson is a direct descendant of Amaterasu Ōmikami.
This is a myth about when Ninigi no Mikoto, that is, "Tenson," whose great-grandson would become the first emperor Jimmu, inherited the country of Japan and descended from the heavens to stand on the earth for the first time.
It is an auspicious and prestigious program, depicting the birth of the world’s oldest nation “Japan”, befitting of National Foundation Day.
Sarutahiko appears to go greet Tenson, or Ninigi no Mikoto.
Tenson descends from the heavens, performs a dance for abundant harvest (Hōjō no mai) by sowing the seeds of five grains in all directions, and then plants his own spear into the summit of Mt. Takachiho, proclaiming his vow to never fight.
Sarutahiko performs a dance of the country’s land (Kokudo no mai), opens up the path to the earth, and guides Tenson as they make their way to the earth.
Our country’s history meets a great turning point, the "Tensonkōrin," due to the transfer of the land (kuni yuzuri) by Ōkuninushi no Mikoto (the earthly god who had been protecting the earth prior to "Tenson Kōrin.")
Ninigi no Mikoto is also the god of rice crops, and his planting his spear into the ground upside down symbolizes his proclamation of the arrival of a peaceful world without the need for weapons.
* Amaterasu Ōmikami: The "Sun Goddess" called is said to be the chief divinity of Shintoism.
* Ninigi no Mikoto: Grandson of Amaterasu Omikami, the famous and ancient sun goddess of Japan, and is one of the Amatsukami gods. He is also known by the name "Tenson."
* Sarutahiko no Mikoto: A deity appearing in Japanese myths. He was responsible for guiding Ninigi no Mikoto when he descended from the heavens. Worshiped as the god of trailblazing and wayfinding, he is revered as a symbol of safe travel and forging new paths.
* Ōkuninushi no Mikoto: An important deity in Japanese mythology. Widely known as the main deity enshrined at Izumo Taisha Shrine in Shimane, he is worshiped as a god who brings blessings for marriage, business prosperity, and prayers for good health, etc.
